2014 RCCAOI 1/10th Electric Off-Road Irish National Championships Report

Round 2, Dublin Model Car Club:

The first second round of the RCCAOI Nationals was held at the Dublin Model Car Club track at The Naul, Co Dublin. It is fully enclosed indoor astro turf track with indoor pitting.  The layout was changed in advance of the nationals and only run for a couple of weeks to iron out any issues.

Unlike the first round where weather was an issue, the conditions here would remain consistent throughout the day. However the drivers voted for round by round qualifying over FTQ.

The DMCC track promised to keep the drivers dry for the day

After his win in 2WD Clubman at Round 1, Kevin White showed no let-up in his domination of the class. With 3 wins in qualifying he kept his pole position for the finals. However, Graham Parkes slipped down the order qualifying 4th on the grid

with Wayne McGuire and Jack Cunningham pushing him down two places.

In 2WD Modified Mark Penny took pole in the B5M, though it wasn’t as straightforward as round 1, with him finishing last in the third heat. Young Schumacher driver Dylan McBurney took 2nd with a fantastic win in the third heat. Third position was occupied by Dylan`s “Mechanic”, Denzell, who is also a Schumacher team driver.

The 4WD Modified class was poled by Mark Penny, with round 1 winner dropping down to 4th on the grid. Not that this meant much as this was the same positions the two drivers took in round 1. 2nd and 3rd positions were taken by Dylan McBurney and Michael Bolger. Michael hoping to improve his points this round, and Dylan being new to 4wd but no less talented.

4WD Clubman was poorly attended as it’s a beginner class, the only contender was Graham Parkes with his DEX410.

Kevin White takes to the air

The finals kicked off after a break for lunch, with Schumacher’s Kevin White taking yet another three wins but the fight for the remainder of the rostrum positions was down to Graham Parks, Wayne McGuire and Jack Cunningham, all three in Durangos. Graham had a poor second leg but managed to claw back second overall with a second in the final leg. Wayne took 3rd overall, which he was very happy with. Though he has promised to give Graham a run for his money at the next round when he switches to Tamiya.

2WD Clubman winners, 1st Kevin White, 2nd Graham Parkes, 3rd Wayne McGuire

Mark Penny seems to be running away with this year’s Nationals, though looking at the pace of the McBurneys it may not be quite so straight forward at the next two rounds. Though Mark took three wins taking first position.

Going into the final leg it was a fight between Michael Bolger in the B5, Denzell McBurney and Dylan McBurney. Though it ended up with the two Schumacher drivers on the rostrum with Dylan in 3rd and Denzell in 2nd, but tied on points with Denzell taking the higher spot with a better time.

Meanwhile in the B final, the overall win was taken by Adam Keegan, who has been getting better and better and will be one to watch for next year.

2WD Mod Winners, 1st Mark Penny, 2nd Denzell McBurney, 3rd Dylan McBurney (the tallest)

In 4WD Modified, Mark Penny had something to prove after his overall 4th position in round 1. In the end he swapped with Bradley Baird taking the win with a 1,1,1. The top three drivers finished in the same positions for the three legs. Bradley came 4th overall, leaving the two drivers tied in the championship. Dylan McBurney drove three fantastic finals with three seconds leaving him tied in the championship with 3rd position winner Michael Bolger.

4WD Modified winner, 1st Mark Penny, 2nd Dylan McBurney, 3rd Michael Bolger.

Overall this was another successful round with 31 cars on the track. Nothing has been decided yet, and Mark Penny will need to keep up his current pace to take the win in 2WD Mod. Second place is currently tied between 3 drivers, so it’s anyone’s championship.

4WD Modified and 2WD Clubman is no different, which should give us some exciting racing in the next two rounds.

Ian Thompson took out a Predator for one of the 4WD finals to show they are still a great car

The RCCAOI would like to thank the Dublin Model Car Club for putting on a great days racing, but we would specially like to thank all the drivers for turning out and look forward to seeing them and maybe some new faces at round 3!
