RCCAOI Final Round 4 Race Report

2018 has been an amazing year again for 1/8th scale off road racing in Ireland, and the final round, Rnd 4 earlier this month at Navan Nitro Nuts was no exception to this. The track was in excellent condition, and the work put in by the members in the preceding fortnight had really paid off.  Also, the timing loop had been moved to the far right corner of the track, minimizing the possibility of accidental activations this year.

The Saturday practice got off to a great start at 12 noon sharp, with several drivers on the rostrum waiting for the stroke of 12 to get started. The astro track was very dry and the grip was very high, so everyone was trying different tyres and tweaking their set up to lay off some of the grip. The atmosphere was really warm and friendly which is only what you would expect from the Navan lads.

Sunday threatened to spice things up with some wet weather in the air, not a popular prospect after the high grip work that was done the day before, but there was only one very light shower all day which did not effect the grip to any real degree.

There were two main contenders in the Nitro class Championship going into round 4, Alan Scroggie with 298 points, and Bradley Baird with 295 points, both former National Champions, followed by Paul Myles and Barkley Abernathy with 293 and 291 respectively, so it was going to be a nail biter of a final in any case.

Heats got underway on time Sunday, and there were no real surprises in the way the points were mounting up round after round. After qualifying, Bradley took TQ, and pole position in the A final, Alan was number two, with Paul in the third slot and Barkley in the fourth. Bradley also too TQ in the E buggy class, so he was racing for a double.

The first lap of the A final was a bit of a melee, with Bradley in front around the first corner, but at the back by the end of the first lap, however true to form on this occasion, he fought back lap by lap, and was in front before his first fuel stop, Alan and Bradley had a close race all through the final, but Bradley held the lead for most of the race, crossing the line in 1st position, In the E Buggy class, Bradley also took 1st, with Colin Whelan in 2nd and young Adam Stewart in 3rd place.

Qualifying

2wd Modified

With the 2wd championship still up for grabs, Dylan showed his early intention as the only driver to go 18laps in round 1.  Denzell took 2nd in the round with 17 laps and everyone else on 16laps.  The top 2stayed the same in round 2 with Dylan taking the overall TQ.  The pace improved in round 3 with Will and Colin getting into the 17 lap pace.

2wd Clubman

Gary took the win from Ken and looked to continue his dominance of the clubman class.  Gary went on to win rounds 2 and 3 from Ken and Chris.

4wd Modified

Dylan set the early pace on 18 laps to take the round from Colin and Andrew.  Round 2 and 3 saw the same finishing order.

4wd Clubman

Gary, running 4wd for the first time this season, took the win from Ray and Emmett.  Emmett improved in rounds 2 and 3 into second but Gary held on to win all the rounds.

Finals

2wd Modified.

Adam was the biggest improver in leg 1 finishing 4th.  Will fought hard to come back from an early mistake for 3rd.  Dylan took advantage of TQ and held on for the win from Denzell.

Leg2 saw the top 3 stay the same which meant Dylan would finish 1st on the day and 1st in the championship.

Will improved in the final leg to take second place from Denzell with Dylan taking the 3rd win from 3 finals

Final results were Dylan – 1st, Denzell - 2nd, Will - 3rd.

2wd Clubman

Gary won leg1 with a comfortable cushion.  The race was for second place with Ken pipping Chris by just under 1s.

Gary cruised for another win in leg 2 and the overall for the day.  It was business as usual for Gary in Leg 3 as he took the win in the final leg

Final results were Gary – 1st, Ken – 2nd, Chris – 3rd.

4wd Clubman

There were no changes in leg1 from the qualifying order with Gary winning from Emmett and Ray.  After everyone made early mistakes, the race settled by lap 4 and Gary took the overall.  Leg 3 was the same result with no drama.

Final results were Gary – 1st, Emmett – 2nd, Ray – 3rd.

4wd Modified.

Dylan maintained his qualifying pace and went 18 laps in leg1 to finish 1st.  Colin finished 2nd and Andrew 3rd.

The results in legs 2 and 3 were the same as all 3 held their qualifying positions.

Final results were Dylan – 1st, Colin – 2nd and Andrew -  3rd.

Well done to all the winners on day and to Ray Carlin and Dylan McBurney for securing the 4wd Clubman and 2wd Modified National Titles
